Remarketing

Remarketing re-engages an advertiser's own existing customers within a publisher's inventory, using matched first-party data instead of third-party cookies to identify who to reach.

In a Decentriq data clean room, an advertiser's CRM data is matched against a publisher's audience inside a confidential computing environment, so the advertiser can find and reach known customers without handing over its full customer list.

How it works

The advertiser uploads CRM data covering existing or lapsed customers, and the publisher supplies its own audience data, with neither data set leaving its original environment. The clean room matches the two datasets to find where the advertiser's customers overlap with the publisher's inventory, and the resulting segment can be activated with tailored creative right away.

Case Study: TopCC

1,800

inactive customers reactivated

3.5x

return on investment

Swiss wholesaler TopCC wanted to reactivate inactive customers across its Cash & Carry markets while also reaching new prospects. Working with its agency, TopCC combined CRM-based remarketing to lapsed and inactive customers with lookalike modeling to find new, similar shoppers, matching both against premium Swiss publisher inventory inside a Decentriq data clean room without exposing raw data to either side. The combined campaign reactivated 1,800 inactive customers and delivered a 3.5x return on investment.

Frequently asked questions

How is remarketing different from retargeting?

Remarketing re-engages an advertiser's own known customers using its CRM data. Retargeting follows pseudonymous prospects around the web using a tracking pixel, without necessarily knowing who they are. See our guide to remarketing vs. retargeting for the fuller distinction.

How is remarketing different from lookalike targeting?

Remarketing reaches an advertiser's own existing customers. Lookalike targeting instead finds new prospects who share characteristics with those customers.

What match rate can the advertiser expect?

Unfortunately there's no easy answer here, as it's highly dependent on your data, the data of your partners and the common identifier(s) you use to match it. Rest assured, the match rate is not such a critical metric for most use cases, see this article that explains why.

Does any particular contract need to be signed with the publisher for this use case?

In Europe and in more and more legislations, a data sharing agreement is required between the advertiser and the publisher that deploys a clean room for remarketing.
